PAGE EIGtIT , Word From [ The Governor I By Arthur B. Langlie WASttINGTON'S F O R E S T provide the biggest source of income for the people of our State,i~ an income roughly e s t i - mated at $750,- '000,000 annual- ly, accruing di- rectly and in- directly through production and p r o tossing of forest products. Agriculture is a close second to forests as an income source. Gov. Langlie The third wealth producer is our fisheries in- dustry. Next comes other sources of importance, but there is one which is seldom considered and mentioned. Nevertheless it is one of our fast-growing re- sources although of recent orig- in. $ * * O U R NEWEST CONTENDER for a position among the big- income sources in our State is the tourist trade. During the calendar year just ended, all previous records were broken when a total of 3,380,000 out-of-state visitors toured our State. A remarkable develop- ment in connection with this re- cord is the fact that of these visitors, 55 per cent made their first vacation trip to Washington during 1952, according to infor- mation gathered bY the State Advertising Commission from a survey made through the Bureau of Economic and Business Re- search of Washigton State Col- lege. Most of the other 45 per cent of last year's visitors indicated that they had made at least two! or three trips to our State pre- viously. Many reported they had spent more than 10 vacations in Washington. * * * IT IS SAFE to assume that with such a large percentage of the 1952 tourists having visited our State for the first time, we can expect a continuing growth in the tourist trade. When these 1,850,000 first-time visitors returned to their homes, they naturally related the ex- perienees of their tour to friends. This lasting audience would be numbered by the millions---and TIt___EE ARLINGTO TIMES_______A, ARLINGTON, WASHINGTON_ TIIURSDA]T, FEB__ 5,195___ 3_ lions gained increased knowl-we received an untold amount V^^ |,~$^ $^ P| .... ]:,, FOR SALE, or will trade forlPLACE FOR SALE or trade on edge of our State and its oppor-:of free publicity in all media-- lW hatg tU t,,la~ily house in Arlington, 10. acres,I place in town. 3-bedroom (unities as a vacationland.
